About the Author

Scott Empson is the chair of the Bachelor of Applied Information Systems Technology degree program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where he teaches Cisco routing, switching, network design, and leadership courses in a variety of different programs (certificate, diploma, and applied degree) at the postsecondary level. Scott is also the program coordinator of the Cisco Networking Academy Program at NAIT, an Area Support Centre for the province of Alberta. He has a Masters of Education degree along with three undergraduate degrees: a Bachelor of Arts, with a major in English; a Bachelor of Education, again with a major in English/Language Arts; and a Bachelor of Applied Information Systems Technology, with a major in Network Management. He currently holds several industry certifications, including CCNP, CCDP, CCAI, CEH and Network+. Before instructing at NAIT, he was a junior/senior high school English/language arts/computer science teacher at different schools throughout Northern Alberta. Scott lives in Edmonton, Alberta, with his wife, Trina, and two children, Zachariah and Shaelyn.

He continues by showing you how to use route summarization to make your routing updates more efficient. Then, the author shows you how to connect to Cisco devices. He then shows you how to navigate through Cisco IOS Software. Next, the author shows you how to configure commands to a single router. The author continues by showing you how to configure static routes in your internetwork. Then, he shows you how to configure and verify EIGRP. Good
lots of cisco commands along with examples on how to use them.

Bad
No index for individual commands, Only chapters like OSPF and EIGRP.
If you have a general idea about what you want to do the guide is great you can find your command in one of the chapters.
If you are starting out, finding a command is hard sometimes and takes up your time. "ip-domain name test.com" is the command correct and if not what chapter would I look for an example?

Commands for Cisco routers and switches

Good book for commands as I am learning how to configure routers and switches. Possibly, this a better book for someone that has a better overall understanding of procedures for cisco set up. For a newbie, it would help if there were a bigger index of the commands, or possibly a way to search what it is that you are trying to implement to get to the proper commands. Overall, this book has helped me and is worth the cost.

Andrew J. DuBrin is Professor Emeritus of Management in the E. Philip Saunders College of Business at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he served as department chairman and team leader. Dr. DuBrin has taught courses and conducted research in leadership, management, organizational behavior, and career management. He presents at other colleges, career schools, and universities. He received his Ph.D. in Industrial Psychology from Michigan State University. Dr. DuBrin has experience in human resource management and is a business and personal consultant in career management, leadership, and management development. Dr. DuBrin is an established author of both textbooks and trade books, and he contributes to professional journals, magazines, newspapers, and online media. This book is outrageously overpriced. The content is common-sense, with very little insight or theoretical or research basis. Many of the sections which claim to list "leadership" characteristics are incredibly sexist. For a graduate level seminar in Management, I found this text completely laughable.

Have the first book? Don't waste money on this edition

I bought the original edition and had mixed feelings. I like the idea behind it, but didn't feel like I could apply it to my military marriage as intended. So when I saw a military edition I got excited! I am and was super disappointed to read pretty much verbatim what I read in the first book. This military edition is 95% verbatim. Copy and paste from the original. There are a few military stories, however the very first story is verbatim, names and all except he added "lived off post" there are some new stories, but not many. I was really hoping that this book would expand and differ from the original love languages since our lifestyle can't always apply the languages. I bought this via iBooks and not amazon, but still wanted to write a review here in hope to help other military families from wasting money on 2 of the exact same books with different titles.

If you don't have the original, buy this one because it does have good info.

Too Similar to the Origional Book

My husband is a Marine Corps OIF/OEF Combat Vet. He is emotionally shut down and doesn't test for any single Language, I hoped that this book would give me better insight into how we can grow from this experience. It was basically the same book that we already have; I was hurt that there was not a greater attempt at helping military couples keep it together. I found the experience of buying and reading the same book again very frustrating.

Definite read for military families.

My husband and I are on our second deployment and have had our fair share of rocky moments in our marriage. I read through this book in less than 3 hours! I had read the previous 5 love languages book and this one is has the same concept but so much more information regarding military couples. After reading this I felt hope in my marriage and thankfulness knowing that we are not the only military couple that have empty love tanks! I just purchased a second copy to keep and I am sending my original copy to my deployed husband. :)

Beware: Reviews Discuss Wildly Disparate Works

The five stars are for Ovid. This note discusses the Indiana University Press edition of Rolfe Humphries' translation of the _Metamorphoses_.

Humphries provides a clear, workmanlike translation.

So far as I can tell, of all the editorial reviews and customer reviews currently (9/11/04) displayed on the page for Rolfe Humphries' translation of Ovid's _Metamorphoses_, only the customer review posted by "elemental master" clearly refers to the Humphries translation.

The _editorial_ reviews describe a Cambridge University Press _Latin_ edition containing only Book Thirteen. Humphries' translation includes all fifteen books, of course. Several customer reviews evaluate books containing translations by Dryden, Innes, and Melville. Often, it is not possible to determine which translation a reviewer is considering. The work offered for sale on the page for Rolfe Humphries' translation of Ovid's _Metamorphoses_ contains only Humphries' translation.

Superb Translation and Edition

This book is wonderful. The Rolfe Humphries is THE translation. This printing is also very nice. The paper, the type, everything makes it a good book. When you turn the page, it turns nicely and lies flat; how refreshing.

The stories of the Metamorphoses are, of course, wonderful. It's the book itself that I want to talk about.

The beautiful Waterhouse painting on the cover spans the front and part of the back covers. The line numbers at the top of each text page are those of the Latin text in the Loeb edition; how many translators would go to that kind of trouble for you? Rolfe Humphries' introduction is light, funny, and enjoyable. His love of his work shines through. The last line of his intro is, "So - here he is [Ovid], and I hope you like him."

The table of contents is annotated, making it easy to find any major story you are looking for. I also love the designs at the beginning of each book/chapter: such details enhance my enjoyment of reading this edition.

If you have never read Ovid's Metamorphoses, don't be intimidated. It is a collection of mythology stories, and you will find much that is probably familiar to you (Echo and Narcissus, Jason, Pygmalion, and more). If you are at all serious about literature, this is a basic building block in your knowledge. And even if you're not, it's just a damn good book.

The translation itself is so fluent and enjoyable. Just listen to the introduction:

My intention is to tell of bodies changed
To different forms; the gods, who made the changes,
Will help me - or so I hope - with a poem
That runs from the world's beginning to our own days.

This is exciting, eloquent stuff! Please do yourself a favor and make sure you read this at some point during your lifetime.

Things change...

Maidens become trees. Young hunks turn into flowers. Men become women; women become invincible warriors. And every time you blink, another poor wretch becomes a bird or turns to stone. In Ovid's Metamorphosis, nothing stays the same for long. A rich compendium of Greco-Roman mythology and history all ingeniously linked together by the theme of transformation, the Metamorphosis is a surprisingly sophisticated, erotic, and gory classic of ancient literature.

Rapes, murders, wars, and all manner of perversion abound. Death is lingered over with almost forensic precision. The slaughter of arrogant Niobe's fourteen children, for example, is recounted in an exhaustive detail that would do any contemporary slasher flick justice, as one by one they're picked off in various grisly ways. This is classical gore--Ovid sounding like the Clive Barker of ancient Rome as in this excerpt from the massacre of the centaurs:

[Exadius] found a weapon, a stag's antlers
Hung on a pine tree...
And Gryneus' eyes were pierced by those twin prongs,
Eyeballs gouged out; one of them stuck to the horn,
The other rolled down his beard till a blood clot caught it.

This is the sort of wonderfully nauseating detail that is repeated countless times in a masterpiece that often reads like the National Enquirer. It's hard not to believe that Ovid, like Shakespeare, was aiming his work for the mass audience of his time, which just goes to show you that the product of one age's pop culture is another's venerated classic. One only has to read Ovid's over-the-top account of the love-sick Cyclops to realize that black comedy ala the B-movies of Herschel Gordon Lewis had already been mastered some two thousand years ago.

There are a bewildering proliferation of translations of Ovid's Metamorphosis to choose from. In selecting Humphries, I chose the text that struck me as the least encumbered by the translator's attempt to distinguish himself from his rivals. Many translators feel the pressing need to do something new, and to `recast' the Metamorphosis into what they consider a facsimile of contemporary poetry. The result is all-too-often a needless accretion of unnecessary words and poetic tropes that do nothing whatsoever to enhance the text, and much towards rendering it more difficult for novelty's sake alone, and to call attention to the translator--two things a translation should avoid at all costs.

Rolf Humphries renders the Metamorphosis into a clear, straightforward English verse whose easy-going casualness facilitates readability and comprehension, as well as reflecting the apparently colloquially style of Ovid's original. And Humphries accomplishes all this without sacrificing any of the poetry--his translation is often quite beautiful, not only in its clarity and apparent simplicity, but in its adept use of language that breathes life back into this ancient work. By stepping back and lending his breath to the ancient poet, Humphries allows Ovid himself to sing again.

One of the truly seminal works of world literature, not to mention an invaluable storehouse of myths and legends, Ovid's Metamorphosis is not only must reading for any lover of great literature, but also a heck of a lot of fun.

Great training program: Training with Purpose

After completing 3 half marathon, I was beginning to plateau and was looking for a nice and robust training program to improve my pace. I came across this book from an email received from Runners World. Bought the New Edition after reading all the nice Reviews the customers had given to the first edition on Amazon. So very Glad that I am not disappointed.
RUNNING LESS appeals to me as I am short of time due to other commitments.
Also RUNNING FASTER is what I want to achieve.
The books Main Principle is RUNNING WITH PURPOSE. Each training run should have purpose so that one gets rid of his junk miles.
There are 3 Main Runs with 2 Cross training days
The 3 mains runs consist of:
#1. Speed Strides and Track Repeats (running shortest distance with fastest pace).
#2. Tempo Runs (running medium distance with fast pace)
#3. Long run (running longest distance with slowest pace)
Makes terrific sense to me!
SO I have started meticulously following the training program and am sure will improve my pace!
Also has sections on Nutrition, Stretching and Strength Training.
STRONGLY RECOMMENDED FOR RUNNERS.
Have to thank the authors for such a wonderful training program.

Buy the app instead

Bought the book and was eager to try out. So far, love it. It is far more challenging than usual training plans. The pace demanded for each run can seem overwhelming/scary, but when it is done, it is a great feeling of accomplishment. Loving that I do not have to run as much and can get some extra sleep in the morning.
The basic structure is to get your most recent 5k,,half, or full marathon race time. That will set the pace for your three key runs per week. You add in two cross training (not cross fit) work outs per week. They give you their recommendations for times and pace for those as well.

My complaints:
1. You can buy the app on the Itunes store for $3 and it gives you the same basic information as the book does regarding structuring the three keys runs and the paces for each. Actually easier to understand than the book. It also gives you the cross train information. The sections in the book I keep referring to for guidance is what is contained in the app.

2. No nutritional help. Yes it does give you some information on what to consume for races, but it is bare. I would love to know recommendations for eating before each of the three key runs per week. I have tried them fasted or with caffeine. Going to experiment with a few carbs before runs next week.

3. No help with form.

Think of the book more as "this is the program and we will offer some extra info to make it look like a book." You could condense the info to about ten pages (minus the pace conversion charts).

A good start yet omits key information

IMMEDIATE BENEFITS. Okay, I ordered the book. Read it through. I bought it because as a runner with aging muscles that do not bounce back like they used to, I already run but 3 days a week, and yet expect to contend in my age group this year (60-64M). I wanted to learn more about what it is I'm already doing so I can do it better.

SUMMARY. It's pretty good start, but lacks information for new and experienced runners. Good principles, but not well developed.

FIVE BASIC PRINCIPLES. Run Less Run Faster expounds ICRPA - five principles of Intensity, Cross-Training, Recovery, Pace Selection, Avoid Injuries.

INTENSITY. I get the Intensity part - both for training, contending with lactate [whatever that is, and I don't mean that facetiously]; and for becoming mechanically and metabolically acclimated to estimated race pace.

Comment on mileage. As one who grew up decade ago on the longer the better principle, it will still be hard to expect to run less than 45 miles a week and expect to be competitive. We'll see. Pierce et al. did not contend physiologically or psychologically with current trend to doing longest runs 1-2+ minutes/mile below race pace.

CROSS-TRAINING. Benefitted immediately from section on Cross Training (especially what to avoid on non-key run days and most importantly why).

REST AND RECOVER. Lacks in describing what Rest looks like. Nothing? I don't know. Dedicating but a couple of pages to the chapter on Rest and Recovery, and not providing good explanations or examples is a definite weakness in this book Pierce et al. need to address.

AVOIDING INJURIES. Well, yes. The three-legged stool comes to play here. Stretching, strengthening, and contending with scar tissue. Again, incredibly disappointingly weak on stretching and strengthening, and omits, truly contending with scar tissue. A mere mention about us with aging muscles needing to do significant weight training. A weak point, really.

PACE SELECTION. id not find this helpful. Mostly because there is pace selection, and there is increasing pace. For example, training for a faster 5K in order to train for a faster marathon. Did not provide any info on this.

The principles are good, excellent, actually. Just not well-developed.

A tremendous resource for customer relations!

Even thought it's a a bit dated, the foundations of this book are still great. I read it upon a recommendation from a friend...and then immediately purchased copies for my entire leadership team. We've already implemented a good number of the approaches Sewell lays out in the book -- we are big fans!

A must read for every business owner

None of the ideas in this book are ground breaking, but the author does a great job of explaining how they translate into loyal customers for your business. There is no abstract psychological babbling lots of similar books have. The author clearly shows the reader what his points are, then uses case studies from both his business and others to reinforce the concepts.
Every business owner should have this book, and I'd recommend buying copies for all the employees as well. It will pay off in the long run.

Best Customer Service Book yet!

Sewell really practices what he preaches.

I had made a visit to two of his dealerships in Dallas; after seeing his operation I HAD to read his book. Both his customers and his employees are fanatically loyal - for good reason.

Carl's view of customer service is very different; in fact he does not have (or need) a 'customer service' department. Instead they create systems to avoid problems in the first place, and each employee (associate, really) is empowered to solve the few problems that do come up on their own.

It's an easy read and a real eye opener.
