About the Author

Paul Scherz is a Systems Operation Manager who received his B.S. in physics from the University of Wisconsin. He is an inventor/hobbyist in electronics, an area he grew to appreciate through his experience at the University’s Department of Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics and the Department of Plasma Physics.

Dr. Simon Monk has a degree in Cybernetics and Computer Science and a PhD in Software Engineering. Dr. Monk spent several years as an academic before he returned to industry, co-founding the mobile software company Momote Ltd. He has been an active electronics hobbyist since his early teens and is a full time writer on hobby electronics and open source hardware. Dr. Monk is the author of numerous electronics books, including Programming Arduino, Hacking Electronics, and Programming the Raspberry Pi.

Great book, but a fail on the Kindle...

For a little background, I own a previous paperback edition of this book from years ago which is buried in storage. As I look into making several projects now that my 3D printer build is complete, I find myself in need of a refresher. I was overjoyed to see a new edition of this book had been released and was available on kindle. Now 20 minutes and 14 pages into the book I've given up and will be buying the paperback edition. In those first 14 pages I encountered 2 places where example calculations should have been displayed and an instance where the symbol for a battery was to be shown. All three situations just had a blank space with references in the text to the missing information the only indication that something was missing . As a result it's not worth my time to continue since I'm not willing to deal with the frustration of this which I assume will continue through out the text.

It's a shame too, since I thought the index was well laid out, liked the hot links within the text that take you to other referenced sections of the book and know that the content of the paper edition is probably outstanding. Thank goodness that Prime will get the physical book to me quickly.

04/20/16 Edit: I've raised the rating of this book from 1 to 3 since I received the physical edition of the book which is awsome and I realize the 1 rating was a little harsh. That being said, I firmly believe that if you are going to publish a kindle edition of a nonfiction book, it must be identical to the physical edition. Someone purchasing the kindle edition should be able to receive the exact same information in a kindle edition as in a physical edition. If you can't publish a book like that, I don't think it should be published as a kindle at all.

I've also added a couple of images from the physical and the kindle edition of the book to illustrate the issue that I'm talking about.

And It Just Keeps Getting Better!!

I have been using this book to teach a university introductory electronics class for several years, starting with the second edition, through the third edition, and will now start using the Fourth Edition this fall. It is an excellent book at an excellent price. The real value of this book, as I shared with my previous reviews, is the breadth of information that is covered. This is a book that should be on the shelf of any engineer who will ever have to deal with any question of electricity or electronics. Does it cover every topic in exhaustive detail? No, and that is part of its strength. It gives enough information for the novice to get the concept along with ways to find more information. A new chapter has been added on programmable logic, which continues to grow more day by day.

In addition to the traditional material on electricity concepts such as voltage, current, and resistance, there is a lot of useful day-to-day information. There is a section on electric motors, a section on home electrical wiring, a section on electrical safety, and lots more. There is a chapter on sensors that is more up to date with the recent advances in less expensive modules that can be used by microcontrollers like the Arduino. Again, no exhaustive detail, but the information is present to spur the reader on to find more detailed information on the internet and in other references.

Thankfully, this book is NOT written like a traditional textbook with lots of theories and derivations of equations. It presents what you need to work with electricity and with electronic components. It's a tutor...it gives you the basics so that you then know how to find the information when needed. At over 1000 pages, there's a high probability that any topic the reader wants to know about is at least mentioned along with the means to find further information.

Paul Scherz started with a classic book with the first edition. With Simon Monk's addition to the team for the Third and Fourth Editions, this book is destined to be the new standard for electronics instruction.

A Great Book Deserving of Better Quality Paper

This Book gets 5 stars due to it's content, and all of the dedicated effort of the authors. However, this 4th edition suffers from paper quality issues, and unfortunately there is a fair amount of show through on the pages which is distracting while reading.

This is great book, with a lot of extra info worked into the 4th edition. And to the publishers credit the price has been kept low. But I have to wonder if this good price was at the expense of the publisher choosing a lower quality paper to stay within a price point.

I would have been happier to pay a higher price for better quality paper in this book. And I feel the Content, and the Authors deserve it.

Overall I'm sad that the publisher took the path that they took when putting this title into print.

About the Author
Ken Kesey was born in 1935 and grew up in Oregon. He graduated from the University of Oregon and later studied at Stanford with Wallace Stegner, Malcolm Cowley, Richard Scowcroft, and Frank O' Connor. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, his first novel, was published in 1962. His second novel, Sometimes a Great Notion, followed in 1964. His other books include Kesey's Garage Sale, Demon Box, Caverns (with O. U. Levon), The Further Inquiry, Sailor Song, and Last Go Round (with Ken Babbs). His two children's books are Little Tricker the Squirrel Meets Big Double the Bear and The Sea Lion. Ken Kesey died on November 10, 2001.

Yes, you have to work but this book will reward you for it.

This is the Kesey novel that nobody read after One Flew Over the Cuckoos nest stole all its thunder. Although it was filmed with an great cast (Henry Fonda, Paul Newman) it never gained the reputation that its inferior sibling achieved.
This is, quite simply, one of the great classics of the 20th century. Its pace and moody evocation of the American North West are stunning. The collision between the traditional and the modern, the past and the present make riveting, enthralling reading.
The Stamper family are loggers, rough, hard men and women who care for no ones opinion but their own. They are fighting the union, the neighbours, the town, their whole world. Their motto of "never give an inch" was the title of the film of the book. Into the strike-breaking start of the book comes the dope-smoking, college educated half brother, the prodigal son. His arrival triggers a tidal wave of events that spiral gradually out of control until everything that has been permanent before is now threatened.
If I seem vague in this review it is simply that I don't want to deprive you of the pleasure of discovering this story for yourself. This is one of the forgotten masterpieces. A book to be read, and then passed on to friends who are later bullied to give it back to be read again.

Incomparable

Sometimes A Great Notion is, in my humble opinion, one of the finest pieces of American literature. I read this book when I was 18, 25, 33, 45 and now once again at my half-century mark. With each read the book has taken on more meaning, more clarity, more subtlety--more importance to living itself.

When I heard of Kesey's passing recently I felt a remorse, a sadness that I had never gone out of my way to meet him and look him in the eye and tell him that this one work of his had touched my life in many ways, moreso than almost any other book I've read.

Other reviews here sum up the narrative well, but there is one passage near the end that cuts far into the meat of the novel:

"...there is always a sanctuary more, a door that can never be forced whatever the force; a last inviolable stronghold that cannot be taken, whatever the attack. Your vote can be taken, your name, your innards, even your life. But that last stronghold can only be surrendered--and to surrender it for any reason other than love is to surrender love..."

An important lesson for us all. We can only hope that Ken has found his eternal sanctuary.

Ken Kesey's Underappreciated Second Novel

Like "Cuckoo's Nest", this novel is as big and as expansive as the Pacific Northwest it is set in, where Kesey spins the colorful tale of a ogging family pit by circumstance against big business and the negativity of small town America. Describhed with his usual kaliedoscopic powers of wonderfully flowing detail and color, this is a complex and multi-layered tale, with more than enough ingredients for sustained exploration and interest; passion, betrayal, the intricate inner workings of an interesting family of individuals who love and need each other but at the same time want and need to stretch and grow, to be more than just who they are within the confines of that family.
In a sense this book is a almost a deliberate self-parody; Kesey shows there are many more ways to be a man than through the mere use of what are usually thought of as masculine characteristics. Thus we have a character like Hank, the ultimate bad-ass Stamper counterposed by Leland, the younger half-brother who is intellectually curious, a bit rowdy and uncertain, and who is exploring wht it means to be a "Stamper". This interesting rivalry and opposition between the brothers is used to explore a whole range of issues about what it means to be areal man and a real grown-up, and Kesey understands that in contemporary America the two hardly mean the same thing.
Yet at heart, this is a novel that lovingly but urgently explores the idea of family; what it should be, what it is, and what it should never let itself become. The Stampers beseiged are the family at their best, fighting, working, loving, and struggling together to keep it together and to define their own future and their very own version of the American dream; one they define and create, and expressly not the easy and popular one manufactured and sold politically and economically by big business and by the local townfolk themselves. This, then, is a novel that explores so many levels that it is undoubtedly will be continue to be read and interpreted and reread and reinterpreted again and again over the coming decades. May it well survive the journey, and may it well navigate its course, just as the Stampers do, through a deep understanding, love and appreciation for what it means to be an individual as well as a family member in contemporary American life, learning along the way. Ken Kesey never disappoints, but he is sometimes hard to keep up with as he chuckles his way ahead of us into the stormy rapids of life. Enjoy!

About the Author
Peter is a New York and Los Angeles based photographer specializing in advertising and commercial work, including portraiture, fashion, beauty, editorial, actor's headshots, events and corporate photography. “Let me give you an idea of the round about way I picked up a camera and found a new love. It and most of my life revolve around the sport of sailing. In 1993 after graduating from Boston University I hadn't a clue as to what I was going to do with myself. That summer I was doing what I had done every summer since I can remember, racing sailboats.In August, I won a National Championship and decided to train for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. While training full time, a friend sent me to see a designer at Ralph Lauren, who was in search of real sailors to model in a Polo Sport advertising campaign. I had an incredible time and months later my picture was seen around the world. More importantly, I met a true friend and eventual mentor, Bruce Weber, who was the photographer on the shoot. Bruce continued to take pictures of me sailing and after failing to make the '96 US Sailing Team, I found myself in New York at the start of a new modeling career. Modeling led me into acting, but the dream of a gold medal still lingered in the back of my mind. After a few years, I dropped everything and decided to jump back in the boat and train for the Sydney '00 Games. It was during this time that Bruce encouraged me to start taking pictures of sailboats. My training paid off landing me a berth on the 2000 US Sailing Team. Shortly afterward, I took up the camera and while shooting a regatta I turned the camera on a fellow model/actor and friend of mine who had come along for the day. Those pictures ended up in his portfolio and created the outset of my new career. Since then my pictures have led me into advertising and my clients now include Levi's, Reebok, DKNY, Johnnie Walker and Axe Deodorant to name a few. I am continually growing as a photographer and I'm so glad that my crazy path has landed me here with a camera in hand. I would like to give a special thanks to Caggie Simonelli, Bruce Weber, and Josette Lata for making this possible.”

Interesting book-great content from a guy who knows the field. He is the most infamous and famous headshot photographer in existence so if you are in the field you should get it. I am also a headshot photographer-I shoot 500-700 people a year so for me this book was a curiosity and I think he did well putting it together. He does not approach a great deal of studio lighting concepts but he does discuss the field and his approach to humans so it is an interesting book

Totally amazing book for anyone wanting to photograph head shots. All practical on how to set up a studio, help relax people, and get the shot. I've read 3 times and keep coming back to it. Thank you Peter.

Peter Hurley writes about Peter Hurley -- oh, and also about taking headshot photos

Roughly half of The Headshot is about producing good headshots; the other half is about being Peter Hurley. His hyperactive, grandiose, self-promoting showoff personality is on prominent display throughout. So is more than a touch of defensiveness, as he talks about how some subjects and agents have expressed a dislike for his style but he's an artist and that's just how he does it, man. What he calls "Sherlock Holmesing" bears a troublesome resemblance to what pickup artists call "negging," and at least one other reviewer has already pointed out the distasteful incident in which he expresses a desire to smash an insecure subject's boyfriend's face into a C-stand. (This book's release date was pushed back twice -- seven months altogether. It makes me wonder what shape it was in at press time. Did it contain an even higher Hurley-to-technique ratio than it does now?) He goes off on so many personal digressions that I often needed to refer back to the chapter subheadings to remind myself what information I was supposed to be receiving.

The upshot is that this book is intermittently informative but not well-written. If you take all the tips in this book at face value, all you're going to learn is how to shoot like Peter Hurley, and Peter Hurley is probably better at being Peter Hurley than you are. The challenge is to pick your way through all the puffery to find the actual useful information, of which there's a good amount (though probably not $45 worth), practice with it for a while, decide how much of it suits your own visual style and way of working and how much doesn't, and disregard the rest. In the end, I figure I'll probably use between 10 and 30 percent of what this book contains -- and yet even that 10 to 30 percent will make a significant difference in my portrait shooting, so I'm glad to have it.

ETA (12/3/15): Having gotten some friends to volunteer to let me practice on them, I'm more appreciative of some of the details that are buried in Hurley's rambling, which I didn't think about until the issues came up -- things like checking hair with each shot, and how to get through to "avoiders," "diminishers" and "posers." I do find myself wishing, however, that he'd given more attention to shooting subjects with eyeglasses: he talks about how to avoid glare but neglects to discuss lens distortion. Anyway, I'm upping my earlier estimate of the book's useful content from "10 to 30 percent" to "30 to 50 percent."

One other way this book is useful: the sheer number of examples. Hurley never talks about it at all, but by systematically going through every headshot in the book, categorizing each one by mood, and noting the positions of the subject's chin and collarbone, I was able to create a posing guide for myself, which is improving my workflow dramatically by keeping me from wasting time on poses that aren't going to work. Maybe this book is worth $45 after all.

Informative as a stand alone book.

I am an Aerospace Engineering student and bought this book to supplement my Controls course. The book is informative and helpful. Before starting my Controls course, I used MATLAB but wasn't familiar with many of the controls functions and their purposes. This book does a good job letting you become familiar and comfortable with MATLAB. The book isn't as helpful in my advanced Controls classes, but I still refer back to it when I need a refresher on something.

Dr. Lakshmi Prayaga is an assistant professor in the Department of Applied Sciences, Technology, and Administration at the University of West Florida. She has an interdisciplinary background with a master's in philosophy, a master's in business administration, a master's in software engineering, and a doctoral degree in instructional technology. She has been a recipient of several local and national grants. She is currently working on designing a robotics platform for education that online students can access using the Internet.

Jeffrey Hawthorne earned a bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary information technology with a specialization in digital media and a master's degree in software engineering at the University of West Florida. He currently works at Global Business Solutions as an open-source developer.

Alex Whiteside is a computer engineering student at the University of Florida in Gainesville. He has worked as a programmer for numerous agencies, including the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory and American Express. He currently serves as the chief technology officer at RILE, Inc.

Another reviewer already mentioned that the online resources are unavailable. A week later these resources are still unavailable, rendering this book worthless to me. I paid to have the book rushed to me as I had a short window open in my schedule that I would be able to dedicate to this. Unfortunately that window is now closing and my money was wasted. Shame on the publisher - I feel sorry for the authors.

Can't find the Assets for the Chapters!!!

The book is easy enough to follow, and I really enjoyed seeing my app take shape on my phone while using App Inventor, but the fun quickly ended when I couldn't find the required resources (images, sound files, etc.) for the chapters. The book directs you to "[...] to find the corresponding material, but I checked and I could not find anything at all. I'm very frustrated by this and hope that I can figure out something as I really hate to spend money for nothing!!!

Except MIT App Inventor 2 is out ....Already did 2 apps per the book and he seems to explain a lot. I would recommend it to ppl who are curios on how to create your own apps.
