Great Reference For Mechanics, Pilots and Racers

The publisher, ASA does a consistently great job with their materials.

Although the handbook is targeted to the needs of the aviation mechanic (A&P), it offers a wealth of information for pilots interested in the maintenance of their aircraft.

The topics covered include basic metallurgy, taxi signals, identification of nuts and bolts plus fittings, use of various tools,corrosion identification and management, batteries from theory to maintenance. Many helpful tables such as the battery voltage vs % charged.

The organization is excellent. The book is pocket book size but spiral bound which allows it to lay flat. Paper is heavy quality stock and easy to read.

For the pilot there are pages of illustrations to help identify parts which greatly facilitates conversations with shops.

Lots of tables including trig functions, resistor identification, drill sizes, aluminum alloys etc.

For the racer many of the practices regarding hardware, plumbing and electrical systems are very similar.

Every A/C Mechanic Must Have This Book

Although some of the information contained in this book will be common knowledge for experienced aircraft mechanics working in the field, the section on hardware such as bolts and the section on corrosion are worth the price of the book alone, even for those with experience. Every aircraft mechanic needs to have a copy of this book. This book is as essential as Kevin Carter's book concerning the A&P License and having a high-paying aviation career ([...]).

Every person working as a mechanic as well as every person interested in becoming an aircraft mechanic needs to have a copy of this book. I recently found myself without a copy, and that's when I realized its true value.

I find some of the table lacking, but the book still contains much needed information for those of us working out in the field. Do not hesitate to buy this book. You will need it.

Good Resource for Aerospace

It was suggested by our ODA administrator to get these books for the Unit Members. They have come in very handy right off the bat. Helping us get a feel for some things that might have been a little fuzzy on parts we supply to customers. Nice spiral bound edition sits flat on the desk, and makes it easy to read and compare.

Prior to her joining Aegis, she served as the Assistant Vice President for Health Affairs/Compliance for the University of Louisville Health Science Center. In addition, she serves on the Board of Directors for the Health Care Compliance Association and the Advisory Board of the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics. She is President of the Compliance Certification Board and is a Past President of the Health Care Compliance Association.

Greg Warner is Director for Compliance at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and has served Mayo for more than 20 years in health care administration. He has served in the past on the Board of Directors for the Health Care Compliance Association and has held the positions of Secretary, Treasurer, First Vice President and President of the Association.

Good CHC Prep

This is short enough that you can read it cover to cover in your hotel room at an HCCA conference. I did that and passed the CHC exam on the first try. If you're reading this, you're probably trying to do the same thing and I recommend this book for that purpose.

Understand that the brevity of the book is a feature, not a bug. The CHC is simply not the kind of test that is looking for rote memorization and I think a lot of people get tripped up by the fact that this simply isn't the sort of thing you can study for with a deck of flashcards. There really isn't that much raw material and the test is about actually applying that material to situations on the ground. As such, this book is not about being a compliance officer so much as it is about learning to THINK like one.

PS: Another tip, a lot of good information is buried in the glossary, and after you pass the book continues to be useful with its model forms.

this book was long on dollars and short on content. this book is a little less than $1/ page. It gives an amazing amount of appendices to supplement its short content. provides a very fleeting overview of compliance even for a '101' book. If the price was less than half what is being charged then perhaps it would be an ok value. else, bypass this.

Fascinating and broad sweeping historic fiction

This book caught my attention quickly, rewarding me with richly drawn characters, insights into British politics, and fascinating historic detail. Starting with the Peterloo Massacre in Manchester, Lancashire in the early 1830s, the book provides a vivid account of 19th century working class life, the rise of the Labour movement, the suffragette movement, mining disasters and strikes, Bolshevism, and events up through the beginning of World War II. Ambitious and proud Labour leader Hamer Shawcross is a truly compelling character some describe as arrogant. I found him to be more complex and likeable (perhaps forgiveable) than that. Equally well drawn are his wife Ann, the unforgettable Pen Muff, Labour leader Arnold Ryerson, aristocrat/exploiter Buck Lostwithiel and so many others. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about British life and the power and limits of politics to effect change in the 19th and 20th centuries. Howard Spring succeeded in telling a powerful story full of insight and compassion. Written in 1940, this book deserves to be read by a new and wide audience.

Anthropologist Piers Vitebsky, Head of Anthropology and Russian Northern Studies at the Scott Polar Research Institute, has been doing fieldwork among shamanic cultures since 1975. His researches range from Siberia to India to Sri Lanka and beyond. In this book he has provided a clear, non-technical introduction to a badly misunderstood field. Included: bibliographic information (including citations of his own studies) and a glossary. The book begins with a discussion of shamanism and its worldview, moves on to regional traditions, talks about shamanism from the shaman's viewpoint, and ends with a brief discussion of the new shamanic "movements" (fads).

As with "Far Eastern wisdom" reinterpreted and sold by people educated in the West, shamanism has been the target of intense cultural appropriation. A worldwide esoteric spiritual tradition has been diluted into self-help, with guided imagery exercises sold as "shamanic journeying." As Vitebsky notes, "Many forms of neo-shamanism use elements from North American native religions which I have characterizedin this book as not strictly shamanic. In addition...native organizations have started to criticize some of these systems for cultural imperialism or intellectual piracy." It would seem to be a characteristic of the empire psychology so many of us share but do not see that we feel entitled to uproot practices and traditions that grew up in very different societies instead of exploring our own.

A strength of this book is its presentation of shamanism as actually studied in its indigenous contexts. This frees it of the choking layer of common mischaracterizations (e.g., shamanism as dark night of the soul, self-improvement method, or spiritual path for people taking drumming lessons). I often recommend this book in my graduate holistic studies classes because here in California everyone and their mother think of themselves as shamans after attending some workshops and watching a few videos. The real shaman does not decide to become one but is selected from a long shamanic lineage by imaginal guides ("spirits") whose manifestations vary across cultures. The selectee then works as a shaman if he or she survives the initiatory illness (some do not). Nobody who has lived through the illness would choose to walk it as a spiritual path. It has nothing to do with self-improvement, and genuine shamans sometimes report feeling wounded by it for decades after enduring it.

Bonuses of this book include the glossy text stock and beautiful photography. Most of the pictures are small, but evocative, especially the agonized expressions of the shamans who appear throughout the book (e.g., pages 10, 58, 65, 98, and 156). The book also discusses the arduous training the shaman will need for a lifetime of dissociating and painful ecstatic trances that (in the shamanic view) hold the energies of the world community in balance beyond the healing work done with an occasional human client.

A Good Quick Reference

This volume provides a good quick reference on the varying aspects and traditions of shamanism. Whilst it doesn't boast the detail of Eliade's Shamanism for example or contain any how to information, it is an excellent introduction for those approaching the subject for the first time. It is beautifully illustrated and does provide enough pointers to guide you in the right direction. It is supplemented by a good bibliography and a list of contacts (although how current the latter are I don't know). Taken for what it is, an introductory text, the book achieves its goal admirably. In my opinion it is also a useful supplement to Eliade by countering the dryness of Eliades text. In summary a readable introduction to the topic.

An interesting look into Shamanism

Vitebsky may have not put together a masterpiece with this book, however there is a multitude of excellent information within its pages. The book covers shamanism cross culturally, so you get a taste of shamanism in Siberia (where it first originated) Africa, South American, North America, and many others. Some of the information in the text may be a little dated or flawed, but if you are someone who is just getting interested in the area of shamanism I highly recommend it. The text is easy to read, has vivid pictures, isn't too dry or boring, and doesn't spend an exorbitant amount of time on any one thing in particular. In short it's a fun and interesting educational read.

About the Author

Brian Goetz has helped students of all levels achieve success in mathematics for sixteen years. As a curriculum specialist for the Grand Rapids Area Precollege Engineering Program, he created numerous materials to motivate and inspire underserved populations. Brian also ran a math learning center at Bay de Noc Community College, where he helped students exceed their expectations of success. Brian has been teaching at Kellogg Community College for eight years. A common thread throughout all his teaching experiences is that an active and supportive environment is needed for students to succeed. With this belief close to his heart, Brian finds working with the other authors to be one of the most rewarding experiences of his career. When he isn’t working, Brian spends quality time with his family and friends, mountain bikes, and kayaks. He dreams of spending a summer kayaking around Lake Superior.

 

Graham Smith has spent his life immersed in education. He was raised in a family of six teachers, where dinner conversations often centered on public education. Since then, Graham has gained sixteen years of classroom experience, and spent the last 9 years teaching full-time at Kellogg Community College (KCC). The majority of Graham’s professional life has been focused on the education and success of the under-prepared student, which he continues through this work as the Developmental Mathematics Coordinator at KCC. Graham’s substantial training and experience in mathematics and education, as well as his training and certification in developmental education through the Kellogg Institute at Appalachian State University and the National Center for Developmental Education, provide a comprehensive understanding of developmental mathematics. This background and experience provide the author team with a well-developed perspective. In his spare time, Graham enjoys spending time with his wife Amy, catching big fish, playing the guitar, and tinkering with his car that runs on recycled vegetable oil.

 

Dr. John Tobey currently teaches mathematics at North Shore Community College in Danvers, MA where he has taught for thirty-nine years. Previously Dr. Tobey taught calculus at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He has a doctorate from Boston University and a Master's degree from Harvard. He served as the mathematics department chair for his college for five years. He has authored and co-authored eight college mathematics textbooks with Pearson. He is a past president of New England Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (NEMATYC) and is an active member of the American Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (AMATYC). In 1993 Dr. Tobey received the NISOD award for excellence in teaching.

It's a textbook

This is a required textbook for our DIgital Circuits class, over all I think the book is very simple and easy to understand. It's not written for people who are geniuses, it's actually written pretty down to earth. The only problem is that the book lacks depth, it doesn't go into very much details. I would be looking for problems as tough as my class assigns, but the book itself doesn't teach that depth.

This book was given to us for our Intro to Digital Design and Circuits class. I personally loved reading the book as a learning enthusiast and an ECE major. The book provides good examples that relate to real life to help you understand. I still keep the book to this day as a reference. I recommend the book to anyone starting out, not necessarily for people who already know their basics.

About the Author
Michael Ochs developed an addiction to rock and roll in the early fifties. To feed his habit, Ochs headed the publicity departments of Columbia, Shelter, and ABC Records in the 60s and 70s. He has also been a disc jockey, taught a rock-history course for UCLA and written for such magazines as Rock, Melody Maker, Cashbox, and Crawdaddy. Michael Ochs established the Michael Ochs Archives in the mid-70s. The archives currently house millions of photographs and over 100,000 albums and singles.

Nice collection of cover art.

A really great book, took me back to the days of my vinyl collection that I foolishly sold years ago. I really appreciated the grouping of the albums by themes that showed the development of art style over the years. I do wish the format were a bit larger though, a part of the great appeal of album art was that great 12" size. This would do very well as a coffee table art book size. T

As a student of public policy, I found this book to be very useful. It provided a system of analysis for evaluating the need and effect of regulating private industries. Various forms of explicit and implied subsidies, competition and disfunctional economic bottlenecks are addressed. This book is a classic-- fads and philosophies come and go regarding the desirability for regulation but the basic economics and considerations remain the same. No other book that I found was as good.

Old school economics

This book should really be a history book. It's very dense and the language makes it feel like you're reading something from the turn of the century. However, the quality of the information is still relevant today and is definitely useful from an economic historical persepctive with regards to regulation.
