WOW! Just wow!!! Cassia, I’m in awe! The Way We Rise (Book #3 of The Story of Us series) is the perfect conclusion to such a phenomenal trilogy! What a beautiful ending with an epic, mother of all epilogues! You never cease to amaze me time after time!

Secrets will be revealed and then some! Can Rory and Houston’s relationship handle the truth and its repercussions? This heartfelt and emotional read is about impermanence, acceptance, friendship, hope, love and happy beginnings. I cried, laughed, swooned, cried even more and my heart skipped a beat at a particular scene which nearly killed me! (Side note: Cassia, how could you?! Some of us have weak hearts! LOL!)

“You see, in real life, there are no happy endings, because real life, real love, has no ending.”

Fret not! We will find out what happens to all of our favorite characters (and Tessa…) that we have grown so attached to over the last two books. That’s the magic of Cassia’s masterful storytelling — she keeps it real by creating well-developed characters, realistic plots, and most importantly, the life lessons imparted will resonate with every reader. She is truly an amazing author and I love this book and series tremendously!

The Story of Us series will stay with me for a very long time to come and I’ll always hold these quotes close to my heart.

Always good writing, but this story is very juvenile w/unlikeable characters.

Writing is good. Typically I've really enjoyed this author. As others have said, the problem is that the character's are just so unlikeable! These characters do everything that just make you cringe. The heroine is weak, dependent, sorry for everything that isn't her fault, and not sorry for the rather stupid mistakes she makes over and over and over again. The "hero" is shallow, stereotypically male, stereotypes women, makes completely unforgivable mistakes, and it is not believable that he loves the heroine in any way. The best friend has some fun dialogue, but is a TERRIBLE friend for pushing these two dysfunctional and immature people together. No one seems to grow. The drama and tension is the story seems so manufactured. The parent story development might be appropriate if the protagonists were teenagers, but they're not!

There's sex, though, but nothing original or that seems to relate to the individuality of the characters at all. The trilogy is drawn out painfully. They're together, they're not. Lies, betrayal. Round and round again. The drama is senseless and no one seems to grow up. Seriously, the guy is a perfect description of a conniving douchebag, yet he's better than the "villain"? The girl is a depiction of all that is wrong with how women are seen and stereotyped.

The conclusion that made this journey worth it and more.

I should have known Cassia Leo wouldn't let me down. The Way We Rise, book 3 and the conclusion to Houston and Rory's story, was the absolute perfect way to finish this series. I have to admit I was put through the wringer with these two more than once throughout their difficult journey. Houston and Rory have faced so many bumps, so many detours, could they truly find their way back to each other? I had to put my complete faith in the author and let's just say at times that didn't seem to be enough.

What I loved most about this book was the continuing deep development of the characters. We get to watch as Houston, Rory, Kenny, Ava, Patricia, James and even Skippy(!) move ahead with their lives, despite all the tragedy and disappointment that has befallen them. With the thread of Hallie both holding them together and still sometimes keeping them apart, it was almost as if they all experienced a rebirth of sorts. Demons start to be exorcised and truths start the healing process for all of them. The horrific scene that ended The Way We Break is the starting point for this book, and it is almost a miracle that Houston and Rory even have a chance anymore. But the author masterfully lets her characters take their time and thoughtfully figure out exactly what they want. Gone somewhat is the rush to judgement that had befallen them before which was a true joy to see.

The love that started with an 11 year-old having a crush on her best friend's brother, has seen more ups and downs then was ever thought possible. But the deep-seeded affection between Houston and Rory never wavers. I found myself smiling more than I thought and oh my goodness, laughing out loud at one of the best epilogues I've ever read. These characters seem to find the right direction this time around yet only time will tell if it will all pay off in the end. Being kept guessing is never a bad thing in my opinion. It just makes you want to keep going until the very last words are read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the entire series. It is a love story that will break your heart more than once, give you some heartwarming moments and keep you riveted from beginning to end.

Highly recommended and a solid 5 stars!

Dawn vs. Mary Anne

Dawn and Mary Anne are best friends... So they're SURE that being stepsisters will be fun.

They were wrong.

For one thing, Dawn and her mother are vegetarians, and Mary Anne and her father eat meat a lot. For another, before Mary Anne and her father moved in, it was common to find towels carefully put away... in the silverware drawer. And at Mary Anne's house, her father put his shirts in the closet alphabetically by color: Blue, brown, gray, red, white; like that.

As a side plot, Dawn and Mary Anne's friend Mallory Pike, who has SEVEN brothers and sisters, gets her SECOND case of chicken pox... Then three of her brothers get pnemonia... Then her other brother breaks his finger... Then one of her sisters sprains an ankle... Then her other sisters get bronchitis (I think)... Finally, her parents get injuries when they're playing tennis.

Will Dawn and Mary Anne ever speak to each other again? Will the Pike Plauque end? Read this book and find out!

THE ODD COUPLE

This is a nicely written story about the differences in personalities and reinforces that old adage about not knowing someone until you live with them. Mary-Anne's dad marries creepy Dawn's mother. They are polar opposites -- he's fastidious and fussy, like Felix Unger whereas she is casual and cavalier, like Oscar Madison. I thought some of her misplaced items were actually funny, e.g. socks in the refrigerator and the like.
Mary-Anne has to contend with the pushy, overbearing Dawn. (Poor kid)! She is a gentle, somewhat naive girl who has a good heart and would not even so much as swat a mosquito. Dawn, on the other hand would walk over her own brother and mother in a second. She is brash and inconsiderate and in general is a brat. The parents each support the step child in the interest of furthering family harmony and luckily it all gets resolved in the end. Each girl gets her own room and luckily the house was big enough to provide this nice solution.

Can't they be friends again?

When mary anne's father and Dawn's mother were married, Mary Anne And Dawn used to be Best Friends but now they are rivals. Mary Anne and Dawn are getting into a fight here. Jeff tries to stay out of it. But how will Mary Anne and Dawn be friends?

At the end of the book, There is a letter explaining to you why it is called "Dawn's Wicked Stepsister". Just guess that maybe that she has a stepsister and they also get into a fight

After the letter, There is a notebook page that explains when did you read it, when did you finish.....

After that, there is special photos about Dawn showing her when she was a baby, They also show her having a spooky mystery at their old farmhouse.

Later, ann Martin wrote something that read all the books about Dawn. I only have Dawn and the impossible Three, The Ghost At dawn's House and this book about Dawn and for the mysteries i Have Beware, Dawn!.

Novel Idea

The best way to describe this book is to think about a lawyer arguing a case before a court and presenting a novel argument with no primary authority or evidence to support it. While the argument may sound good, it is unlikely a court would disturb established precedent in order to adopt such a novel argument. This is precisely what the author Dan Herman is asking of the reader, to adopt his novel arguments on marketing, while discarding established marketing precedent.

In disposing of what Herman believes to be outdated principles of marketing, he introduces his own "new terms," so that he gets you into his movie, so to speak.

Throughout the book, Herman attempts to draw comparisons of his system to a variety of successfully marketed products and companies, none of which are based on his system. Also, there are no footnotes linking any evidence or studies to support any of his theories. Herman does say, however, that "This isn't a textbook, so I'm not going into precisely what each term means and how we research and analyze each and every topic." In effect, Herman is asking the reader to adopt his theories, while disposing of established marketing principles, which he contends no longer work, a tall order to say the least.

The book is well written and has its moments, yet falls short in establishing any evidence to support this supposedly improved marketing system, over that of the principles being used by MBA clones. Since the book introduces so many new terms, it could benefit from adding a summary at the end of each chapter, tying in those key points and terms.

In short, the book boils down to a series of novel arguments. Whether they work in the dynamic world of marketing is anyone's guess, since the author is defining the scope of that success with a variety of his own new terms and ideas, which have yet to be adopted or proven.

Fresh perspective

So many business books are telling a similar story, but this one's got some new perspectives. I don't agree with everything Herman says, but it's nice to have some different experiences and opinions to consider than just the same old, same old. It's also much cheaper than most textbooks! Worth the money.

Leonard M. C. Sagis obtained a PhD degree in Chemical Engineering from Texas A&M University, in 1994. The major portion of A Timber Framer's Workshop was first written back in 1983. Over a period of a number of years several revisions and additions took place, as it was used as the handout workshop manual for Fox Maple Timber Framing Workshops. At last, it was published for general distribution in 1998.

When this book was first published in 1998, scientific testing results for pegged mortise and tenon joinery simply did not exist. The corollaries that could be made at that time were drawn from testing results for bolted connections. This is common in engineering as the essential physical laws concerning force and motion, primarily Newtonian physics, are symmetrical. However, nothing ever beats a direct test for a specific condition as the results end with an emphatic exclamation point. In the past five or six years testing has at last been carried out for a number of the most common pegged joinery conditions and the results have been published. The impetus for this revision was in large part to update and to include these new testing results so that the readers would be privy to the latest engineering results available for timber frame joinery.

Along the way, over 150 new photos and drawings were added and editorial additions were made to clarify specific conditions, or to more fully explain a critical aspect of timber framing. While the essential book is the same, virtually every element is expanded in some way to paint a more vibrant picture of the technical aspects of how to build a traditional timber frame. In addition, there is an expanded element of color and nuance to help the reader more fully understand the magic of timber framing... and that timber framing really is the Jazz of building.

About the Author
Steve Chappell began his timber framing career in 1970 and has been building, teaching and writing about the craft ever since. As the editor & publisher of Joiners Quarterly, The Journal of Timber Framing & Traditional Building, Chappell was an early and prominent advocate of timber framing and traditional building during the early days of the revival. The Journal represented the most comprehensive source for timber framing and traditional building information available at that time. Through his calls to unite in JQ, the seeds of a guild were laid, and in 1984 co-founded the Timber Framers Guild. As a way of bringing the written information into more tangible use, Chappell founded Fox Maple School of Traditional Building in 1983. The schools campus, in West Brownfield, Maine, currently conducts courses in timber framing and traditional building methods, including traditional clay infill, thatching and progressive natural building systems.

The revival of timber framing over the past 30 years may be one of the most successful attempts ever at reviving an ancient craft and bringing it back into full blossom. Its success, in part, may be due to the fact that it fulfills the requirements of structure is such a pure and direct way, and it naturally inspires and heightens our sense and awareness of craftsmanship. Our reverence for architecture and art stems from an innate human need to see talent expressed. When it is expressed in usable and functional forms, such as buildings that we can live and worship in, we become connected with it in a more intimate way. In an age when technology is expanding at such a rapid pace that today's advances are often obsolete tomorrow, we yearn for things in life that have substance. Timber framing, by it's nature-requiring the touch and the feel of a craftsmans hand, it's use of nearly raw materials, and its substantiality-provides a sense of permanence. There is nothing to hide or m! ask in a joined frame. The work of the craftsman who handled and fitted the joints remains visible-to feel, touch, and to imagine what his days were like cutting the frame. Timber frames remain alive throughout their life, inviting all who will inhabit or enter its space for many generations to come a opportunity to sense the craftsman who worked the timbers. Who among us has not entered an old barn and resisted the temptation to run our palms over the timbers, touch the joints, and in so doing, imagined and felt, in some measure, the presence of the builder within the timbers?

This unique nature of timber framing has inspired many owner-builders to design and build their own timber framed home, and many more to enter the trade professionally. Fueled with inspiration, anyone can accomplish just about anything. However, there is hard work involved, and if one is to be successful, a working understanding of the complete system-structural design, joinery, and a basic understanding of the mechanical and physical properties of wood-is required...

The intent of this workbook is to outline the fundamental approach, coupled with concepts of structural design and joinery, that will allow beginners to develop a stradegy that will make their first timber framing project a successful one...

I actually used the methods in this book to build my 40 X 30, four-bent barn. I can't say enough about this book. From the dedication to the index this timber frame manual was crafted in the same manner as author Steve Chappell's structures: solid, precise and with artful beauty. This book teaches everything from the basic tools to advanced joinery and details everything you need to build a traditional timber frame structure. The illustrations are great and the exercises are extremely useful.

I own nearly every such book on the craft and have dabbled in designing, cutting and building nearly 10 structures thus far. I now wish I had purchased this one sooner. Although Sobon and Benson had been my guideposts, Chappell is now among them on equal footing. There is a treasure trove of information in the book and it takes you to places many other books neglect. It has everything you need to know to get started and much of what you need to know to become very good. The only thing the book doesn't provide is your own personal experience of learning from your mistakes, but that book can only be found in the library of the School of Hard Knocks. I consider this book to be one of three primary "Go-To" books on the subject so do yourself a favor and order it before you get very far in exploring this craft.

A thoroughly enjoyable and compelling read for anyone interested in the design, building and engineering science of basic traditional Timber Frame construction. I especially liked that the book felt personal; one can sense the author's passion and knowledge for the old craft of hewing and joining timbers into beautiful and timeless buildings. How practical it is to build Timber Fame structures using the techniques described in the book in a world more focused on expediency and economics is, as they say, in the eye of the beholder. Thought provoking and practical

This book covers the intersection between community activism and design (focused on graphic design), told through clear, easy-to-read analysis of fascinating and inspiring case studies. It is also beautifully designed, no surprise.

The concise chapter on how to find funding for public interest design is particularly insightful, offering up some practical ideas for how designers can rethink their place in the economy, contribute to projects effecting social change, and still be business savvy.
