A compilation of road tests from magazines around the world. Very interesting to read diverse takes on our favorite little sports car, the NA Miata. Could be indexed a little better, and the pictures show a surprising amount of generational detail loss, but all in all a great source of historical performance data.

Just a note of caution:
Notice that the title Amazon lists for this book is "Mazda Miata Mx-5: Performance Portfolio 1989-1996", but the cover reads "Mazda Miata Mx-5: Performance Portfolio 1989-1997" (the difference is in the dates that are covered). There are two editions of this book, and they do have slight, but significant, differences in the contents. Although both editions are the same size (by page count), the 1997 edition adds an article or two, and deletes others. I have the 1989-96 version, and I have enjoyed reading it, but I can't help but wonder what I have been missing!

Why don't I have more money? Often I wonder when TXT my bank and receive a bank balance I am not happy with. Why Nice Girls Don't Get Rich has helped me reavaluate where I spend my money and also why I spend my money as I do. I love this book by Lois Frankel and I recommend it to my friends and family who have budgets but still struggle with having as much spending money as they want. Coz surely life is not all about paying bills but actually living. Lois Frankel addresses the cultural reasons why women aren't necessarily bad with money but emotionally mis-led with money and how we can learn to control the cultural messages we have been taught growing up and receive from peer pressure. I recommend this book to any girl in her 20s who wants to make more from her money than just a few guilty shopping splurges once a month!

Puts You in the Right Mindset

Read this one cover to cover during a trip. Again, it talks about the dangers of letting your nice girl thoughts and behaviors take over when it comes to managing your money. The one gripe I have is that it focuses more on women who are already halfway to rich, working in high paying professions. However it did give me a few ideas for simple steps I can take to get better control over my finances. It also gives you the proper perspective when looking at your money -- she basically says it's your money and you shouldn't have to feel obligated as a woman to give it away to everyone who wants a piece.

Steve Parker was born and raised in Edinburgh. Scotland, and now lives and works in Tokyo, Japan. As a video-game writer/designer, he has worked on titles for various platforms. Disappointing

Based on the reviews, I was expecting a great story about a Deathwatch Kill Team.

Instead, I got a book about some Inquisitors I didn't like, didn't care about their mission, and didn't care if they survived. And bits about the Space Marines who will be part of this Kill Team. Most of them aren't interesting either, with a few exceptions.

Then, we got the Deathwatch Kill team in action at the end. Finally. So, the Deathwatch is supposed to be the silent killers. And they have a Dreadnought on their team? Buh?

Sigma is up to no good. Not a shock. And this books seems to only exist to get you to buy the inevitable sequel. Unfortunately, I just don't care. I'm amazed this was written by the author of Rynn's World.

Great Characters and Deathwatch Background

Too often Black Library authors depict Adeptus Astrtes as little more than unfeeling robots with little humanity or substantial personality (I'm talking to you Chris Wraight) with few exceptions (David Annadale's Black Dragons, Dan Abnett's Iron Snakes, Nick Kyme's Salamanders, etc...) Steve Parker has done a wonderful job in not only providing some interesting background into the Deatwatch but we get to see the very human thoughts and emotions from various Adeptus Astartes... This in turn provides a connetion with the reader that hopefully makes you actually care about the characters and if they survive or not...

I hope this a begining to an on-going series and I hope to see Talon squad again!

Deathwatch was a Read I could not put down...

The Author Steve Parker tells a tale that feels like a Special Forces story with a 40K background. It was nice to see space marines in a more human persona with actual fleshed out personalities. I kept saying to myself just one more page and found it hard to put the book down. I would like to see Steve Parker delve deeper into The Inquisition and Ordo Xenos and the Deathwatch. I want to know more of Scholar, Prophet, Omni, Ghost and Watcher and see them uncover the sinister plans of Sigma....

About the Author
Syed Ali Ashter is a Development Engineer at EMD Millipore Corporation, developing medical devices from concept to commercialization, and in process development. He performed post-doctoral research on next generation formable films for the automotive industry at McMaster University, and received his Ph.D. in 2008 in Plastics Engineering from University of Massachusetts Lowell. He has been on the Board of Directors of the Medical Plastics division of the Society of Plastics Engineers since 2012. Organized very well

I am teaching this course over the summer of 2004 and I find the organization of the book to be very good. I like that each of the sections covers one, and only one, topic at a time. This really allowed me to make a course that works for the summer (when time is severely limited).
The book is very straight-forward in its explanations. However, the exposition is very limited. That means the reader will have to work out a lot of the details.
As a teacher, the book works for me. I can furnish, in class, all of the details that are lacking - that's what they pay me for.
For self study, I would not recommend this book because of the lacking details. I would have to go with the great book by Tenenbaum and Pollard for those that want to self study this subject.
All in all, I really like the book's structure - each section has exactly one point to make, and then exercises to test the one topic in that section. Also, every other chapter has a collection of "miscellaneous problems" that I pull from for the tests. The miscellaneous problems are great, because I can tell my students that those are the problems I am going to use on their tests (a subset at least). That gets the students to work all of those problems (great motivation).
I would give this book 5 stars if an instructor came with the book. Otherwise, it is a good book that leaves many of the simple and intricate details to the reader.

my favourite ODEs text!

I was stuck with Boyce/DiPrima for an ODEs course & I didn't like it, but I found this one in their bibliography & it turned out to be much better. I think there ARE enough examples to make things clear, and lots & lots of problems to work through. Also, it doesn't make a difference to me whether there's a solutions manual or if it has mistakes because I never use one; I just plug the solutions into the equation & see of they work. (I guess if there are mistakes, they should be fixed though)

[..]Let me warn all potential customers that this book is all about quantity of material instead of quality. While the book does cover such advanced topics as Fourier Analysis and intro to Partial Differential Equations, the book lacks sufficient examples about what is being said (a number of sections have no examples at all).
I did find the most well-written sections to be the application of second-order differential equations (applied to spring oscillations etc.) However, as far as getting a bang for your buck, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Morris Tennenbaum and Harry Polland's Ordinary Differential Equations Dover edition (cheaper, and MUCH MORE effective. Trust me).

A Bridge between Worldviews

Over the past couple decades a quiet conceptual revolution has been taking place in various academic outposts around the world. As someone who has been away from academia for more than thirty years, I find this new multi-disciplinary way of thinking about natural resources, complexity, and the human future, to be highly exhilarating--even to the point of generating hope. This new Second Edition of Sacred Ecology brings into focus the author's own lifetime of work while also highlighting that of like-minded colleagues, many of whom Berkes has collaborated with over the years, together turning out dozens of books and learned articles, all in some way concerned with sustainability. To give an idea of the book's scope, here is a list of Berkes' academic interests (found in his curriculum vitae online). All find play in the book:

Many of the points covered in the book are complex (including complexity theory itself), but Berkes avoids the high levels of abstraction and convoluted prose common to academic writing. Here is a quote to give a sense of the book. "Adaptive Management is a good match for traditional ecological knowledge, and a potential bridge between Western and indigenous ways of knowing in the areas of ecology and resource management. It is part of the holistic tradition in Western science, not the mainstream tradition, but significant nonetheless. This holistic tradition includes systems theory, gestalt psychology, quantum physics, and ecology (Capra, 1996). Systems theory is often equated with complex adaptive systems. Fuzzy logic (not mentioned by Capra) may also be added to the list. Many of these holistic sciences are potentially suitable to provide frameworks for integrating Western and indigenous knowledge." (p 269-70).

Sacred Ecology offers a possible way out of the resource pickle we find ourselves in today, by constructing a bridge between our own failed reductuinist paradigm and one that has proven itself over time.

textbook for Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK)

I did a lot of work trying to find a comprehensive introduction to TEK and this surpassed all of my expectations. Berkes is incredible. This book is pricy, but absolutely worth it. A must for anyone who even thinks they are interested in TEK, LEK, IK, etc.

Many of today's self-help books, according to this husband-and-wife psychotherapy team, try so hard to get readers to find out what's wrong with their relationships that they don't get around to showing them how to improve them. This theme is apparent in the first chapter's humorous title: "The Codependent Cinderella Who Loves A Man Who Hates Women Too Much." By changing unworkable patterns, rewriting their "stories" (false beliefs) and focusing on the future rather than endless analysis of the past, declare Hanlon and Hudson, couples can make love more rewarding-in weeks or even days. Later chapters focus on destructive patterns like abusive behavior, gambling, etc.; "healing rituals" for unfinished business and reconnection; and intimacy and sex. Boxed key points concisely sum up each chapter, and examples from the authors' practice and own marriage lend credibility to this helpful self-help book.

O'Hanlon and Hudson (happily married marriage counselors) put the emphasis on action, not analysis, in their advice on improving any "romantic/sexual relationship, heterosexual or homosexual." They assert that "having a good explanation, by itself, doesn't change anything." This solution-oriented therapy is neatly explained, using many anecdotes from the therapists' own experience, both professional and personal. The advice moves from areas of minor disagreements to marriage- or life-threatening ones and includes suggestions for responding to a spouse's violent or criminal behavior. no self help book would ever get a five from me

so a four is as high as i go. fives are reserved for literature. my husband and i read this book when we were a new couple (seven years ago). he and i both had alcholic fathers and so we are very familiar with the self help genre. and although it does seem simplistic in some ways, i found it to be a most valuable book. if your relationship is at the point where you are afraid to sleep at night for fear of having your throat cut, this is not the book for you. (in fact there are no books for you run to a therapist) this book helps you become aware of the small things we do and can do for each other to hurt or help intimate relationships. its kind of like a "doc my arm hurts when i do that. so don't do that" book but it focuses on things that you will not see (unless you are more observant than i). if is helpful on a day to day level and my husband and i still pull it out and reread chapters when we find ourselves being testy with each other. i recommend this book to all people.

fun and practical

It is a sounding, simple book, but the suggestions are practical. it seems to be "old-fashioned", but in this complicated world, when we all are over-emphasizing internal psychological problems, "behavior-ist" is ignored.
This book reminds us to pick "them" up again and take a look at these simple but yet working principles of human behavior and relationship.

A Self-Help That's Really Helpful!

Unfortunately, many self help books and tapes are one
person's viewpoint on how to solve a problem and have not
been shown to work for a broad spectrum of individuals. This
tape is not one of them. O'Hanlon & Hudson have taken a
very effective method of changing behavior and adapted it to
helping couples. The tape is entertaining and extremely
helpful. It not only explains the why's of couple problems,
but also gives great suggestions on how to solve any problems.
