About the Author

Paul McFedries is well-known as a teacher of Office, Windows, and programming, particularly VBA. He is the president of Logophilia Limited, a technical writing company. Paul started programming when he was a teenager in the mid-1970s and has worked with everything from mainframes to desktops to bar code scanners. He has programmed in many different languages, including Fortran, assembly language, C++, Java, JavaScript, Visual Basic, and VBScript. He has been writing programs for PCs for more than 25 years, and has been developing VBA applications since Microsoft first added VBA to the Office suite in 1994. Now primarily a writer, Paul has written more than 50 books that have sold more than three million copies worldwide. These books include Access 2007 Forms, Reports, and Queries (Que, 2007), Formulas and Functions with Excel 2007 (Que, 2007), Tricks of the Office 2007 Gurus (Que, 2007), and Windows Vista Unleashed (Sams, 2006).

Excellent introduction to VBA

This is a great book for those new to VBA. It covers Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access and Outlook so it does not go into much depth in any particular product. The writing style is easy to follow and all of the examples work. Not for experienced VBA developers.

easy intro

I have a nagging feeling that for some readers, this book will be their first ever on programming. Perhaps they are heavy Microsoft Office users, and are frustrated by constantly doing repetitive tasks, and want a way to automate these. That is the main motivation for the text.

If this describes you, then McFedries' narrative is a gentle introduction to the overall field of programming. The VBA borrows from its original Basic the characteristic of being easy to understand and code. As you go through the text, you get introduced to key programming ideas, common to all languages. Like using for loops, where a control element iterates over a collection. Then there is the while command for conditional execution only once. Well, VBA calls it the do while command, but more generally, programmers just think of it as while.

The book also introduces you to elementary graphics programming. There are various form controls which are graphical elements that you can cause to popup when the user does certain actions. These give rise to event handling issues, which are true of most graphics coding. Microsoft has built an extensive framework within its Office suite so that you can easily code these objects.

The book provides a lot of great starting information, but then it leaves you hanging. In addition it gives great details on the information it does provide, but that's only a small part of the functionality of VBA. It makes no mention of the other information :(

About the Author

Best Book Ever on Renovation

This is a book I wished I'd had when I started building, but it is also one that's extraordinarily useful to more experienced builders. Mike Litchfield was the original editor of Fine Homebuilding; in 1982 he published the first version of Renovation, and it's been updated periodically, this being the latest and 4th edition. Popular Science called it "The most comprehensive single volume on renovation ever" -- totally true.
What differentiates this book from others of its ilk is that the author has gathered all this information in the field, interviewing carpenters, electricians, plumbers, and contractors, finding out what's important, what works, what's new. These guys love to talk about what they do well, and in this sense, the book is one of collective wisdom. It's at the same time highly useful to professionals, but also one that's invaluable for homeowners and people of the fixer-upper persuasion.
The chapter "Planning Your Renovation" is completely new, reflecting the current interest in smaller projects, spending wisely, and energy efficiency. The chapter on wiring covers code changes, and tells you things like how to fish wire, install wireless switches, or replace old incandescent ceiling lights with energy-efficient LEDs.
There's a section on installing IKEA cabinets, tips and instructions on energy retrofits, working with paperless drywall (in wet areas), soundproofing, cutting into a concrete floor, working with PEX plumbing tubing, and installing engineered flooring. I found myself flipping through the book at random, and learning a lot.

Great Book!

As the general manager of a green building company, I buy a few building books each year for the company library. The books that the crew likes most tend to get pretty dog-eared and if they are really useful, they disappear altogether. I bought two copies of Renovation 3 last year to replace missing copies, so I am happy to see there is now a 4th Edition. It seems fatter and a lot of the photos are new and the electrical and windows chapters are a lot longer. I hope the crew likes it. But not too much

A fine book, but don't toss your 1st or 2nd Edition

I inherited the 2nd edition of this book from my father, and found it to be one of the most comprehensive books I've read on home renovation. I still find that 'job specific' books are required when I'm working on a particular task (eg plumbing, wiring, drywall books when I'm doing respectively plumbing, wiring, or drywall), but for getting the 'big picture' the Renovation book is a winner.

The 1st and 2nd editions were published by Prentice Hall, and the 3rd and 4th by Taunton Press (the Fine Woodworking / Fine Homebuilding folks). My 2nd edition was published in 1990, and I recently bought this 4th edition as my 2nd edition is now 25 years old. Since other reviewers have already covered the benefits of this book, I'm instead going to review some of the differences I've found between the 2nd and 4th revisions.

The 4th edition definitely has a more modern Taunton Press style (same for the very similar 3rd edition judging from the Amazon Look Inside preview). The pictures are in color instead of black & white, there are 'Pro Tip' sidebars everywhere, and the font is slightly larger and easier to read. Naturally, the content has also been updated to reflect some of the latest technologies now available: Pex plumbing, laminate flooring, laser tools, etc. Overall, the 4th edition is a nicer looking book, however, that seems to have come at the cost of some useful content. Comparing the two, I find the 2nd edition not only has more content but also more detail in general. For example, Chapter 9, Masonry, has an entire section on using concrete block. That material is completely missing in this 4th edition, in fact, you won't even find concrete block in the index. Same for the discussion of Post & Beam, Balloon, and Platform framing in Chapter 8--no mention at all in the 4th edition. Might be an issue for those with (much) older houses. In the 2nd edition, Chapter 14 was titled 'Cooling and Heating' and covered vent fans, whole house fans, thermostats, furnaces, heat pumps, and even briefly mentioned solar. That entire chapter is now titled 'Energy Conservation and Air Quality', and basically just discusses the latest insulation techniques that were found in Chapter 13 'Conserving Energy' in the 2nd edition. All the HVAC, furnace, fan stuff is gone. On the bright side, the new 4th edition Chapter 13 'Kitchens and Baths' has a comprehensive section on building and installing cabinets. Taunton Press strikes again. The 2nd edition also has seven appendixes including a useful overview of dealing with contractors, architects, and banks; other appendixes include complete detailed instructions for building a set of stairs, a deck, and a fence. That, and much more, is all missing from the 4th edition.

Judging from the Amazon Look Inside preview of the 3rd edition, this 4th edition is very similar but is more up-to-date and has more content, making this edition the one to get for the latest materials, tools and techniques. However, if you still have a copy of the earlier Prentice Hall editions, don't consider these Taunton Press editions a direct replacement. There is still plenty of useful content and detail in those earlier editions that is now gone from these latter two editions, particularly if you're renovating an older house. I took a star off for that, because I now need bookshelf space for both books. However, I'm still quite happy with my purchase of this 4th edition for its up-to-date coverage of the latest building materials and techniques.

Grade 5–7—Grk, a small white dog with black eyes, finds Tim Malt near Tim's London home, setting into motion a series of fantastic, heroic, often fast-paced and sometimes humorous adventures. Grk belonged to Natascha Raffifi, the daughter of Stanislavia's ambassador to England. When a cruel dictator takes control of this small, mountainous country in Eastern Europe, the Raffifis are arrested and returned to their homeland. Tim's parents will not let him keep the dog, and so he sets out to find its owner. His ingenuity gets him from England to Stanislavia, where he is propelled into action that ultimately reunites Grk with Natascha and her brother, Max, and results in their escape from prison. Some characters are caricatures; many are likable and move the events quickly if implausibly to a satisfying resolution. Max, in particular, is used to insert occasional political commentary that seems to foreshadow his future. By novel's end, the children and Grk settle in with the Malts in London, with the promise of another adventure in which the murder of Max and Natascha's parents will be avenged.—Maria B. With workaholic parents, 12-year-old Tim Malt is often alone in his London home playing computer games. Then he finds Grk, the dog that belongs to the Stanislavian ambassador's family. Tim soon learns that the family has returned to its county, which is now under the rule of a despot. Taking brave but drastic action, Tim flies with Grk to Stanislavia and learns the ambassador and his wife are dead and the children, Natascha and Max, are in prison. Soon Tim is embroiled in wild events and political chaos. Despite some stock characters, this is fast paced and entertaining. The author-narrator maintains a presence a la Lemony Snicket, interjecting satiric, sometimes thought-provoking commentary on politics and economic privelege, along with warnings of dire events to come. Occasionally implausible and sometimes violent, the novel is still exciting enough to have kids cheering on Tim and Grk. An author interview is appended. Shelle Rosenfeld

Fun AND intelligent!

Grk is one of those rare books that doesn't treat kids like dumbies.

Tim's adventure is fun, interprising, intelligent, whimsical and very satisfying. It's a really good, inventive story, not just a rehashing of Harry Potter or just another depressing magic/vampire/unhappy homelife book. He relies on himself, his own emotional and intellectual resources, and has an adventure 10 times more fun than any vampire has ever had.

Scary stuff happens, but real scary stuff, not stuff made up of darkness and magic. And it's all stuff Tim handles with typical Brit wit and composure, which makes the story even more humorous and exciting.

If your kid is ready for something fun AND intelligent, this is the book for him/her!

good one for general audience

This is an exceptionally clear book written by an industrial expert for the general public. The book covers a lot of topics with focus on causality and extreme risk. On the other hand, it does not teach how to measure risk, how to do causal inference, etc. It only serves to introduce those concepts. The author also seemed to differentiate between statistics and causality but, in fact, a lot of the theories in causal inference are invented by statisticians, econometricians or epidemiologists (all stat-oriented professionals) - the most well-known framework may be the Rubin Causal Model (RCM)'s counter-factual or potential-outcome approach which seemed to have been missed by the author. The author appeared to favor the Pearl Causal Model (PCM) which is a more in-depth approach to causal inference through causal diagrams and the "do-calculus", and as argued by Pearl and many AI experts, epidemiologists and philosophers, is one of the best approaches. The RCM's potential-outcome approach can also be regarded as a subset of the PCM. However, the author did not describe any of the above methods. For that reason, I cannot recommend a 5-star rating. Overall, it is a wonderful book to read if you just want to learn the concepts not the techniques.

The consequences and likelihood of events that have never before occurred but that can be reasonably anticipated (as a consequence of other events) are included in the quantitative models. Such modeling is the forte of the intelligence community and those responsible for national security, who must create metrics and construct solutions for threats that have never before occurred."

She is a true expert in financial risk management, at the cutting edge of developing new techniques; not some academic researcher publishing a book for resume development. If your hedge fund/money manager hasn't read and mastered this book, you probably should move your investments elsewhere.

Comprehensive verb review

This is a very comprehensive German verb workbook and I found it to be exactly what I needed to prepare for an upcoming trip to Germany and Austria. This product is probably best for a student with some familiarity with the language, as it is very comprehensive. I have had two years of High School German and one year of college level German, albeit many years ago, and found this book to be an ideal review. With Germanic languages, the verb is integral to the listener's ability to understand the meaning of a given sentence, and this guide enables the student to attain the level of confidence required to understand the action. I wish I had used this product when I was in high school, as it would have certainly accelerated my progress with the language. As a break to my German verb studies, I found German news programs via the web to be an ideal supplement to this guide, allowing me to tune my ear to normal conversational German. Disappointing

I write "disappointing" as a life long language teacher and learner. My main criticisms are two. First, the production values are low, with examples apparently pasted into the explanations in what looks like photocopies (hence these phrases are "dead" in a digital reader, cannot be searched for or marked up).

My second problem is bad editing. There are a huge number of capitalization errors, which are crucial to correct German. These add to the impression that the book has somehow been cut and pasted by non-native speakers, native-speakers never having tolerated such inaccuracies. As an intermediate student of German, it is not for me to say that the sentences are unidiomatic, but compared to texts and exercises prepared in German (such as Dreyer and Schmitt's Lehr- und überungsbuch der deutschen Grammatik -- alas, not in ebook form), the sentences often ring false or at least awkward. Save your money and if you have to, go back to paper books.

Good resource, ridiculous amount of typos

While the lessons are explained well and the exercises are helpful, the number of typos is completely distracting. There is nearly a noun capitalization typo in every exercise. This isn't just an occasional, hard-to-find mistake, so I don't understand how this wasn't spotted before publication. Very unprofessional.

This does not contain access to the WileyPLUS system. My professor is requiring that access, and because it was mentioned in the product description, I thought the WileyPLUS code would be included. It, unfortunately, is not, and now I have to return the textbook because WileyPLUS costs seventy-five dollars from the publisher if purchased alone. I will go to the college bookstore and buy the items bundled, because amazon doesn't offer them bundled in hardcover form (only Binder Ready Version).

Otherwise, the textbook honestly looks great. I haven't read it yet, because I need to return it, but it has quite a lot of color pages, diagrams, and learning tools that look promising.

A useful and interesting primer.
